Victoria
Cheltenham, Victoria, Australia
Project completed in 2018
GOLF Magazine World ranking 96
Architects: Oscar Damman & Bill Leader (with Dr Alister Mackenzie)
Restoration: Mike Clayton (with John Sloan, Bruce Grant & colleagues)
Steeped in history and home of five-time Open Champion Peter Thomson, Mike began advising the club in 1995.
Across the street from Royal Melbourne, Victoria was a very good course but one in need of restoration after years of ill-advised tinkering, which had conspired to take something away from its original brilliance.
This long-term project reached completion in 2018 when the greens were re-grassed, allowing for final tweaks to the course and reclamation of its 1930s glory.
Victoria has retained its place amongst the top ten courses in Australia, a testament to the quality of the course in an era when the country has seen a handful of remarkable new courses built. It co-hosted the inaugural Mixed Australian Open in 2022 and is rated #96 in the world by GOLF Magazine.
