Seven Mile Beach
Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
Retained in 2021
Due to be completed in 2025
Architects: Mike Clayton & Mike DeVries
Renowned tour professional Mat Goggin spent many years studying the sandy peninsula to the east of Hobart’s airport carefully considering its potential for golf. Over a decade ago, he introduced Mike Clayton to the site, who rapidly concluded that it was probably the most compelling site for links golf in Australia. A lengthy period ensued during which leases and key permits were secured.
Mat retained CDP as consultant architect in January 2021. Although design work progressed smoothly, the onset of the pandemic and stringent lockdowns significantly delayed site work.
Over recent decades, the site had become covered in radiata pine. Removing the trees confirmed the site’s dramatic terrain which is dominated by huge dunes and ridges.
The course will embrace the design facets for which we stand. Transitions from green to next tee are short. Fairways are wide but their middle is seldom the ideal line. The holes will offer great variety with a myriad of teeing options – in one case, including alternate greens too.
Mike DeVries is overseeing the course’s construction which will be completed in early 2024. Such is his commitment to the project, he has been present on site cumulatively for over 18 months. Opening is planned for late 2025.
