Greywalls at Marquette

Greywalls at Marquette

Michigan, USA

Project completed
2005

Architect: Mike DeVries

Golf has been played at Marquette since 1926 when William Langford and Theodore Moreau laid out 18 holes close to Lake Superior though only 9 were built at that time.

The Greywalls course is located in a mature, second-growth forest with a variety of elevation changes and exposed granite throughout the site. The southernmost portion is a broad, undulating valley on sand which provides an excellent source of irrigation water via the existing well that is used to supply Marquette’s old course.

Mindful of the environmental restrictions, Mike mapped the numerous wetlands and the old plank road prior to undertaking his design work. The combination of rock, elevation and wetlands restricted the course’s routing in many aspects but also presented many opportunities to deliver breath-taking vistas, natural splendour and diversity.

Despite the site’s severity, the course flows across the landscape in a manner that is walkable and intimate. Just forty thousand cubic yards of soil were shifted and three thousand cubic yards of rock blasted during construction.

Opened in 2005 to rave reviews, Greywalls is consistently ranked in Michigan’s top 10.
